Speech AI Funding Surge Lifts UK and European Startups

Founded in 2024 by Mustafa Girgin and M. Sait Demirci, Lucida runs a speech-to-speech platform built on a proprietary Speech Language Model. Rather than typed prompts or scripted drills, users hold real-time spoken conversations with an AI coach that adapts to their level and returns feedback on pronunciation, fluency and clarity. The company says it has reached more than three million users in 15 months and logged over 2.2 billion minutes of spoken interaction across Europe, the United States and emerging markets — the same regions where demand for affordable language and communication training is climbing fastest.

The explicit plan to expand into new languages and geographies is what makes the round relevant beyond Europe. Investor Angelo Burgarello of Look AI Ventures framed the bet as a move away from generic "LLM wrappers" toward a phonetics-driven engine, citing seven-digit recurring revenue.

A wider European wave

Lucida's raise lands within a broader 2026 flow of European money into voice infrastructure and conversational AI. EU-Startups has tracked adjacent rounds including Preply's €127 million Series D, ElevenLabs' €424 million Series D, Munich's VoiceLine, Amsterdam's Reson8 and Ghent's Ringtime — together totalling roughly €585 million when Lucida is included.

The same logic — pairing AI tooling with human expertise to widen access — drives a separate UK deal. As Tech.eu reported, clinician-led provider Saltroad raised £1.5 million and acquired Ogma, an AI documentation platform built for speech and language therapy. The round was led by Techstart Ventures, with Ascension and ScaleX joining.

Saltroad connects families to NHS-trained therapists without waiting lists, and says embedding Ogma across its network of more than 1,000 therapists turns session recordings into structured clinical notes, cutting after-hours admin. Roughly one in five UK children needs communication support, far outstripping supply. CEO Darren Lester argued the bottleneck is structural rather than a failure of effort, while Ascension's Toyosi Ogedengbe stressed deploying AI "alongside skilled clinicians, rather than in place of them."

Why it matters

Taken together, the deals signal investor appetite for speech AI that scales human capacity rather than replacing it. For markets across Africa, where multilingual communication needs and clinician shortages are acute, voice-native platforms built and funded in Europe could become export-ready infrastructure — provided they expand the language coverage their founders are now promising.
