
Nigeria Enters 2027 Election Cycle Unprepared for AI Misinformation, Report Warns
A new SBM Intelligence study finds most Nigerians fear AI-driven political misinformation yet still depend on social media for news, exposing gaps regulators have yet to close.

As European and global technology firms weigh how their platforms and generative AI tools shape democratic contests, Nigeria offers an early test case for the Africa–Europe tech corridor. A new report warns that Africa's most populous democracy is heading into its 2027 general elections without the safeguards needed to counter artificial-intelligence-enabled misinformation.
The study, titled The Algorithm and the Ballot Box, was produced by SB Morgen (SBM) Intelligence and reported by TechCabal. Researchers surveyed 829 people across eight states covering all six geopolitical zones between April and May 2026, combined with desk research into Nigeria's information ecosystem, legal framework and platform policies.
