
Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5, a Cheaper Model Built to Run Agents

Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5, a mid-tier model the company describes as its most agentic to date. According to The Next Web, the model performs close to the flagship Opus 4.8 across many tasks while costing less than half as much. Anthropic said the model became available on June 30, 2026, across every subscription plan.
The pricing pitch is central to the launch. As Decrypt reported, Sonnet 5 closes much of the gap with Opus 4.8 while sitting at a far lower price point — a positioning aimed at developers and businesses that want strong performance without paying flagship rates.
